How to Properly Care for Leather Sneakers
Leather is a very delicate material, vulnerable to water and easily scratched. Therefore, it's essential to care for it from the start by regularly removing dirt and nourishing the leather with specialized creams. Also, be mindful of not wearing them every day, giving your shoes a rest.
-
Remove shoelaces and insoles
If the insoles are removable, take them out along with the shoelaces. If the insoles are dirty, gently scrub them with a toothbrush dipped in neutral laundry detergent or shoe cleaner. -
Be careful not to get water on any part other than the rubber toe and sole
Dirt can be easily removed by scrubbing with a melamine sponge or an eraser. Be careful when cleaning to avoid getting water on the leather parts.
-
Remove dust and debris from the surface
Light dirt can be wiped off with a dry cloth or towel. Gently brushing with a soft horsehair brush is also a good option.
-
Remove ingrained dirt with a leather cleaner
Apply a small amount of specialized cleaner to a dry cloth or towel and wipe the leather parts. The trick is to wipe gently, stroking lightly to avoid damaging the leather.
-
Sun drying can shorten their lifespan
If leather is exposed to sunlight for a long time, it can harden and crack. To ensure they last a long time, aim to air dry them in a well-ventilated, shady spot.
-
Nourish the leather with a specialized cream
Once the leather is completely dry, apply a specialized cream evenly over the entire surface. Since leather is vulnerable to water, using a waterproof or water-repellent spray is also recommended. *Please note that some sprays may cause yellowing. It is recommended to test on an inconspicuous area beforehand.
-
Prevent deformation with shoe trees
Once leather loses its shape, it's difficult to restore. Moreover, deformation can lead to wrinkles and cracks. To extend the life of your favorite sneakers, it's also recommended to use shoe trees.
